426-427 : The Rich Man And The Beggar

426-427 : The Rich Man And The Beggar

"THERE was a certain rich man, who was clothed in purple and fine linen,
and dined sumptuously every day.
And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus who lay at his gate,
 covered with sores, and desiring from the rich man's table.
 The dogs even came and licked his sores.
"It came to pass that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels to Abraham's side.
The rich man also died, and was buried. And in hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torment:
and saw Abraham afar off, and Lararus with him.
"He cried out and said, 'Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus,
 that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue.
For I am tormented in this flame.' "
But Abraham said, 'Son, remember   that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazarus bad things;

but now he is comforted and you are tormented. And besides all this, there
is a great gulf set between you and us;
so that those who would pass from here to you cannot;
 neither can they who would pass from your side come to us.'"

Then the rich man said, 'I beg you then, father, to send him to my father's house;
 where I have five brothers, so that he may warn them,
lest they also come into this place of torment.'
"Abraham said to him, 'They have Moses and the prophets, let them listen to them.'
 And he said, 'No, father Abraham, but if one went to them from the dead, they would repent.'
"And Abraham said to him, 'If they do not listen to Moses and the prophets,
 they will not be persuaded; even though one rises'from the dead.' "
