440 : Caesar's Coin

440 : Caesar's Coin

THE Pharisees watched Jesus,
and they sent forth spies who pretended to be honest men,
that they might make use of his words to deliver him into the
power and authority of the governor.
The spies questioned him, saying, "Master, we know that you are true
and teach the truth, showing no favour, but truly teaching the way of God.
Tell us therefore whether you think it is lawful for us to give tribute to Caesar or not?"
But he saw their craftiness and said to them, "Why do you try to trap me?
Show me a coin. Whose name and image has it?"
They answered and said, "Caesar's."
And he said to them, "Give therefore to Caesar the things which are Caesar's
and to God the things which are God's."
And they could not twist his words before the people.
They marvelled at his answer, and held their peace.

THE WIDOW'S PENNY

Jesus looked up and saw the rich men casting their gifts into the treasury.
He saw also a certain poor widow casting in two pennies.
And he said:"Truly I say to you, that this poor widow has cast in more than all of them.
For all these others have given offerings to God out of their abundance.
But she in her poverty has given all she had to live upon."
