472-473 :A Lame Beggar Healed

472-473 :A Lame Beggar Healed

Now Peter and John went together into the temple at the hour of prayer,
being the third hour of the afternoon.
And a certain man, lame from birth, was laid daily at the gate of the temple
which is called Beautiful, to ask alms of those who enter the temple.
Seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple, he asked alms of them.
And Peter, fixing his eyes upon him, said, "Look at us."
He looked at them, expecting to receive something from them.

Then Peter said to him, "Silver and gold I have none, but what I have I give you.
In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk."
And he took him by the right hand and lifted him up.
Immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength, and he, leaping up, stood and walked, and
entered with them into the temple, walking and leaping and praising God.

The people saw him walking and heard him praising God,
 and they knew that it was he who had sat begging at the gate Beautiful of the temple;
they were filled with amazement and wonder at what had happened to him.

When Peter saw this, he said to the people, "You men of Israel, why do you marvel at this?
Why do you stare at us so, as though by our own power or holiness we have made this man walk?
"The God of Abraham and of Isaac, and of Jacob, the God of our fathers,
is thus glorifying his Son, Jesus, whom you delivered up and denied in the presence of Pilate,
when he was determined to let him go.
But you denied the Just and Holy One, and demanded that a murderer be set free for you.
You killed the Prince of life, whom God has raised from the dead.
 Of that we are witnesses.
And his name, through faith in his name, has made this man strong whom you well know."

THE APOSTLES ARE ARRESTED

As they spoke to the people,
the priests and the captain of the temple and the Sadducees came upon them and were angered that they taught the people and preached the resurrection from the dead,
 through Jesus.
They arrested them and held them until the next day, for it was evening.

However, many of those who heard the word believed,
and the number of them grew to about five thousand.

The next day, the rulers and elders and scribes, Annas the high priest, and Caiaphas, and John and Alexander and as many as were of the family of the high priest gathered together at Jerusalem.
They conferred among themselves, saying:"What shall we do with these men?
That a notable miracle was done by them is clear to all the people of Jerusalem,
 and we cannot deny it.
But so that it spreads no further, let us threaten them,
that they speak hereafter to no man in this name."
And they called them, and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus.

But Peter and John answered and said to them: "Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen more to you than to God, you judge. For we can only speak of the things which we have seen and heard."
And when they had threatened them further, they let them go,
finding no way to punish them because of the people.

Then great wonders were worked among the people by the hands of the apostles,
so much so that the people brought forth the sick into the streets and laid them on beds and couches so that at least the shadow of Peter passing by might fall upon some of them.
There came a multitude from the cities around Jerusalem, bringing sick folk and those who were troubled with evil spirits.
And they were healed, every one.

Then the high priest rose up, and all the Sadducees who were with him,
and they were filled with indignation.
They laid their hands upon the apostles and put them in the common prison.

But the angel of the Lord opened the prison doors by night,
 and brought them out,
and said, "Go, stand up in the temple and speak to the people all the words of this life."
And when they heard that, they went into the temple early in the morning, and taught.

Now the high priest and they that were with him called together the council and all the senate of the children of Israel, and sent to the prison to havethem brought.
When the officers went and did not find them in the prison, they returned,
saying, "The prison we found shut securely and the keepers standing outside before the doors,
but when we opened them, we found no man within."
Then someone came and told them, "Behold, the men whom you put in prison are standing in the temple and teaching the people."
And when the high priest and the captain of the temple and the chief priests heard these things,
they wondered what would come of them.
