71 : Pharaohs Dream
TWO full years went by, and then it happened one night that Pharaoh dreamed:
He stood by the river and, behold, seven fine, fat cows came out of the Nile and they fed in the meadow.
Then, behold, seven other cows, thin and scrawny,
came up after them out of the Nile and stood by the other cows upon the brink of the river,
and the thin and scrawny cows ate up the seven fat and handsome cows.
Then Pharaoh awoke.
He slept again and dreamed a second dream:
Seven ears of corn came up on one stalk.
They were hardy and good and behold, seven ears, undersized and blasted by the east wind,
sprang up after them, and the seven undersized ears swallowed the seven hardy and full ears.
Pharaoh awoke and knew it was a dream.
On the next morning, his spirit was disturbed.
He sent and called for all the magicians of Egypt, and the wise men of the land.
Pharaoh told them his dreams, but there was no one who could interpret them to Pharaoh.
And then the chief butler spoke to Pharaoh, saying:
"Now I remember my faults.
Pharaoh was angry with his servants and put me into the prison of the captain of the guard,
both me and the chief baker.
One night we each had a dream, he and I, each a different dream.
There was in the prison with us a young man, a Hebrew, servant to the captain of the guard.
We told him our dreams and he interpreted them to us,
giving to each of us the meaning of our dreams.
And every-thing happened as he told us, so it did.
I was restored to my office, and the baker was hanged."
Then Pharaoh sent for Joseph.
They brought him hastily out of the dungeon.
He shaved himself, changed his clothing, and came to Pharaoh.
Pharaoh said to Joseph: "I have had a dream and there is no one that can interpret it.
I have heard it said that you can understand a dream and tell its meaning."
Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying: "It is not in my power. God shall give Pharaoh an answer."
